MI Grad Student Slapped With Felony Charge After Driving To Well-Lit Area During A Police Stop

It appears that injustice at the hands of the police have reached a new height of ridiculousness. A grad student from Saginaw Valley State University has come forward saying that he was given a felony charge for allegedly fleeing and eluding arrest. The student is explaining that he simply drove to a well-lit, nearby parking lot for the police stop before being slapped with the charges. He believes that if he had been older or of another gender identity, he wouldn’t have been wrongfully charged. Read more at the Root.

Boko Haram Continues Attacks On Nigerian Residents

One of the most infamous terrorist groups in the world has killed another 40-something victims in its latest attacks in Jos, Nigeria at a popular restaurant and mosque during worship for Ramadan. This has left over 200 dead in the last week by the Boko Haram, as the group has been leading attacks almost everyday. President Muhammadu Buhari has made it a priority for his time in office to strike down the Boko Haram but it has proven challenging, as the group has been stepping up its plots on victims. San Francisco Woman Shot Dead By Hispanic Convict, Reintroduces The Immigration Debate

After a woman was shot dead by a man from Mexico with numerous deportations and convictions in his past, the debate on how to navigate illegal immigration in the US is slowly coming back into the forefront as a national debate. The conversation is also being pushed in light of Donald Trump’s recent controversial comments in his announcement that he was running for president. Kathryn Steinle, 31, was walking to a popular tourist destination with her father when the incident happened. Some are referring to the shooting as a highly unusual event that isn’t representative of undocumented immigrants at large. Meanwhile, San Fran local authorities are firmly stating that they are a“sanctuary city” and they are not going to start turning over undocumented immigrants for federal custody. Congress Gears Up To Reform No Child Left Behind

Democrats and Republicans agree that major updates need to be made to former President Bush’s 2002 bill, No Child Left Behind, but it remains to be seen how they’re going to get a bill that they and President Obama can agree on and sign into passage. Legislators will be addressing how to ensure quality education for poor and affluent children without too much intervention from the federal government. A bill that has been sponsored in the Senate keeps math and reading tests mandated, but would move assessment of school and teacher performance from Washington to the respective states. Furthermore, legislators are trying to decide if the federal government will still hold any specific academic requirements. Read more at the New York Times.

Confederate Flag Gets Struck Down In SC Senate, Now SC House Casts Its Vote 

The Senate decided almost unanimously to take down the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Capitol Grounds with a 37-3 vote on Monday, then a final 36-3 vote on Tuesday. But the Republicans in the House might pose a challenge, as many declined to comment on how they will vote on the topic when surveyed by the Charleston Post and Courier. Read more at CNN.

Bonus Round: Greece Lags On Building New Plan For Debt, May Be Pushed Into ‘Grexit’

The new finance minister of Greece, Euclid Tsakalotos, caught some side eye today when he walked into a meeting with other eurozone leaders without a proposal for pulling the country out of debt as originally planned. Tsakalotos says he will be presenting the proposal tomorrow, but the country is quickly running out of time and options. Debt negotiations with creditors are already tense after the country voted ‘No’ in its referendum on austerity measures and Greece still needs to pay 3.5 billion euros to the European Central Bank by July 20—otherwise, the government would be deemed as bankrupt and its bond portfolio would reap huge losses. Nona Faustine is making waves with her latest art project, “White Shoes,” a photo series in which she poses nude at various spots in New York City. Photos depict Faustine at sites like the steps of New York’s City Hall, street corners in the Financial District, a cemetery in Brooklyn and the New York Supreme Court to illustrate that slavery was as prevalent of an institution in the North as it was in the South.
