Howard University recently announced that Between the World and Me author Ta-Nehisi Coates will give the school’s prestigious Charter Day Address this March.

Coates will join the likes of California Attorney General Kamala Harris and Chief Executive Officer of JPMorgan Chase & Co. Jamie Dimon who gave past addresses in the event’s 148 year history.

“Ta-Nehisi Coates continues to use his talents to inspire others as well as elevate racial, political, and social consciousness and discourse in this country and around the world,” said Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick, Howard University’s President.

He added, “The Howard Community is deeply honored to welcome Mr. Coates’s return to the Mecca to reconnect with our campus and share in our 2016 Charter Day celebration.”

It’s been an incredible 2015 for Coates, who majored in History and attended Howard from 1993-1999.

His New York Times best-selling book Between the World and Me won a NAACP Image Award and the National Book Award, plus he was granted the prestigious MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Fellowship. And yet even with those accolades, the alum is most excited about this opportunity to come “home.”

“It is my incredible honor to address Howard University on Charter Day. I have been lucky enough to receive a few accolades over the past year. Undoubtedly the chance to return home in this fashion outranks them all,” he said.

Howard’s Charter Day Convocation celebrates the school’s incredible legacy of Black brilliance and serves as their largest fundraising event of the year. The event is also being co-chaired by actress, director and Howard alum Debbie Allen who wrote

“Not only does [Charter Day Convocation] celebrate the founding of this extraordinary institution but it is especially symbolic of all that the University represents as we reconnect to enjoy an evening dedicated to acknowledging the awe-inspiring talents of Howard alumni and honor them for achieving excellence in their professions.”

Congrats Ta-Nehisi!
