The Chicago Police Department has launched an investigation on one of its own after video of a white officer making comments about slain Ferguson teen Michael Brown surfaced last week. On the clip, the officer is heard saying that Brown “deserved” to die and that he “got what he had coming” as well.

Details about the video are scant, including the offending officer’s name and when it was filmed. The CPD is electing to handle the matter internally, rather than let it play out in the media with extra details. The Chicago Tribune looked deeper into the background of the video and its ongoing investigation launched just days ago.

From The Chicago Tribune:

Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the investigation was ordered last week after the video surfaced. It’s not known when the incident took place.

“The comments in this video are troubling and do not represent the views of this department,” Guglielmi said in a statement. “Upon learning of the video, we have opened an internal affairs investigation in the actions of this officer.”

The department has not identified the officer.

The video catches an apparent argument between an unidentified man and the officer, who is in plainclothes and is standing next to an unmarked car.

The man tells the officer he doesn’t trust the police because “you all might shoot us.” He then mentions Brown’s name.

As he walks back to the car, the officer says Brown “deserved it” and adds, “He got what he had coming.”

Ferguson, Mo. has continued to be the epicenter of tension between police officers and people of color across the country, with the city barraged with protests and outbreaks of violence in the year since Brown was fatally shot on August 9 in 2014.
