Sircie Varnado, 46, was unarmed when the drugstore employee shot and killed her after suspecting her of stealing. No files have been charged in her death.

Since 2001, nearly 51 women, mostly African-American, were strangled or asphyxiated on the south and west sides. The Chicago Police Department is finally reviewing those deaths to see if they are connected.


The 56-year-old is also the first openly gay candidate to be mayor of the Windy City.

Each of the 16 charges carries with it a possible sentence of probation to four years in prison.


A local bomb squad did not find any explosives at the Chicago facility.
