It hasn’t even been a month since gentle giant, Eric Garner died after an NYPD officer placed him in a choke hold and the police department is making headlines for using the same restraint tactic again. This time, 27-year-old Rosan Miller, who is seven months pregnant, was allegedly placed into a chokehold after getting busted for illegal grilling (yes, BBQing on a summer day) in Brooklyn and was given a summons for disorderly conduct. The incident has been caught on camera and the photos of the altercation are making their rounds on the Internet, thanks to the advocacy group, People Organizing and Working for Empowerment and Respect, released the photos, outraging people everywhere. As if the images of the police manhandling these unarmed victims for non violent crimes wasn’t enough, get this: chokeholds are illegal in New York City.

In Miller’s case, the officers went to her home over the weekend because she was grilling on a public sidewalk, which was in the violation of local law. Their confrontation took a violent turn and ended with Miller and her brother and husband, all in handcuffs. Miller’s daughter can be seen in one of the photos, watching her mother get arrested. Miller’s brother, John Miller was charged with harassment and obstruction of justice and her husband, Moses Miller was charged with resisting arrest and obstruction.

When former city councilman, Charles Barron heard about this horrific incident and complained to the cops to expedite their release. “This was all over a grill,” Barron said. “This is about grilling in front of her house.” The NYPD has got to do better! New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton ordered an extensive review of the NYPD’s training procedures after the death of Garner,

After a two-hour meeting with NYPD Training Commissioner Ben Tucker last week, Bratton ordered a “top to bottom review of all the training that this department provides to its personnel, specifically focusing on force, how do we train our officers for a takedown, how do we train them to use the various levels of force that they’re authorized to use.”

“I would anticipate that coming out of this effort that there will be a re-training of every member of the New York City Police Department in the weeks, months and potential years ahead,” Bratton said. Well, that would be the way to go, because it seems the NYPD is misinformed on the type of force they are allowed to use. Here’s hoping a retraining will reel them back in.
