kandi buressKandi Burruss, accomplished singer, songwriter and reality TV personality is getting ready for the fourth season of “Real Housewives Of Atlanta.” She is preparing her very own Bravo show entitled “The Kandi Factory,” and unleashing a luxury adult pleasure line for all women to enjoy.

Kandi sat down with us for an exclusive interview where she shared her thoughts on the image black women on reality television shows portray, her new ventures and sexual products.

“We as black people can be very critical of our own race” says Kandi. She isn’t fond of having to represent an entire race just by the way she acts on television. Kandi sees a clear line between the RHOA and her actual occupation–one is for fun and the other is real work!

“The Kandi Factory” will give talented individuals the opportunity to be managed by Kandi and her extravagant team. She is offering full artist development in an era dominated by social media and Youtube.

Check out what the Grammy award winning artist has to say about it all:

F**k what the media (or ANYONE else) says about US…..there are MANY sides to ALL races, and it’s NOT fair to lump us in ONE pile. epsecially when they get their jolly off of the BAD things IJS…..

Everybody is NOT bad or good…..guess MANY people FAIl to remember that when it comes to OUR race……..

True… what I dont like is that too many times imposing, ignorant behavior is celebrated. Being ghetto or hood is not just cute anymore. Its about power and respect. How many times are you out and about and it is one of us that is doing “way too much ?”

Kandi is truly the bizness, who doesn’t get the recognition she deserves.

    Much respect to Kandi!

I am a fan of Kandi, but she must acknowledge that the reasons that the “Real Housewives of New Jersey” don’t get as much flack is because there are varied portrayals of Caucasian people on tv.  There are very few portrayals of African Americans on tv these days, so there are people who want those few portrayals to be solely of positive, professional African Americans.  It would be different if “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” was on the air at the same time with multiple positive portrayals of African Americans such as “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air”, “Living Single”, “The Cosby Show” and “Lincoln Heights”.  Basically, for those who are critical of the show, for every RHOA they would like to have 4 positive sitcoms a la “Living Single” and 2 well done dramas a la “Soul Food”.

Kandi whether you like it or not your on televison so your are an example.

I don’t think Kandi is a bad example so I don’t understand why she has a problem with being a role model.

I agree with all the previous posts because you all have a point.  On the one hand its not fair to be the representative of an entire people just because you have a high profile job, gig, position, etc.  But on the other hand, you cant talk that my brotha/ my sista talk if you’re not gonna back it up.  WE all have a responsibility to each other.  I suppose thats always been the difference between white people and us.  That’s why Lindsay Lohan is not a slight against white women and just her self.  We come from “it takes a village”  and they come from “its all about me”.  This country was built on white women being the center of their own universe.  And because they act like its their world…your momma always gave you that talk before you she took you anywhere outside the neighborhood..”now when we go in their, I expect you sit up straight, dont touch anything”..etc, etc.  She was trying to teach you that we’re ALWAYS under the microscope, famous or not.

Its a problem when 1 person has to represent a whole culture of American Africans. Problem is that too many people who dont come from our culture is in control of our culture. When u see black people make a “white” show, it will only fumigate stereotypes. Thats whats been the problem everything that our culture owns, even in Hip Hop. Dont hate the player, hate the game  enough to change the damn thang.

Kudos to Kandi…Love the interview…I think she is a very classy & intelligent business woman & artist. As for reality TV that is just what it is. I don’t know why people can’t decipher that. It is a job. They put months of stuff in an episode. This is my guilty pleasure. It’s entertainment. If you go thru life looking for someone you don’t really know or will probadly never meet in person (STARS) be a/your role model than shame on you. Your role model should be who ever raised you. This is the time we live in. You can always not watch…S/N I live in the Chi I see women acting a fool daily this is not just on TV…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/dkh2/ dkh2

The portion of your post about role models is good in theory, but we can’t assume that everyone has been raised in a good, loving household.  I know more than one person who was sexually abused by their own father.  Hence, the person that raised them was sick.

I understand that you are not promoting that people model themselves after abusers, but for those who were abused, they have no choice but to look elsewhere for role models.  In an ideal world, African American children would model themselves after couples like the Obamas, but this is not an ideal world.

ANYONE WHO COMPREHENDS THE TRUE DEFINITION OF REALITY WOULD NOI  BE IN AN UPROAR REGARDING THE CONTENT OF THE PROGRAMMING OR HOW AN INDIVIDUAL PROTRAYS HIMHERSELF ON THE SHOW. NOTHING IN REALITY IS SCRIPTED THEREFORE THESE SHOWS ARE NOT REALITY BASED BUT ARE SENSATIONALIZED FOR SHOCK VALUE AND ENTERTAINMENT.
ANY INDIVIDUAL WHO BECOMES ANNOYED BY THE ANTICS ANY PERSON DEPICTS ON THE SHOW MAY POSSIBLY BE REMINDED OF SOME CHARACTERISTICS THEY POSSES AND HAVE YET TO GAIN THE COURAGE OR DISCIPLINE TO RECTIFY THEM. LIKE THE OLD SAYING GOES IT IS EASIER TO HIDE IN THE DARKNESS WHILE YOU ARE SHINING THE LIGHT ON OTHERS

This woman’s logic and professional choices are unashamedly opportunistic and definitely a part of what is wrong about the portrayal of black women on tv today.  She is clearly not a role model, not an actress or entertainer (in fact, shes now repping more bad talent just like herself), and has nothing more to offer the world besides SEX TOYS?  Hmmm…Just what we need…Another sellout so called “entertainer” blabbing on our tv screens about nothing while  fighting drinking gossiping creating drama and singing like a strangled cat…when she’s not promoting sex toys, that is.  Anything to stay in the limelight, right, reality tv hoes?  For that Hollywood paper they flop and drop like dominoes…And dont really care how we as a people are coming to be randomly discriminated against and hated on worse than ever as a result of all of this negative black imagery on tv.  I swear, if I see one more wanna be singer/dancer/rapper/entertainer begging for dollars for the weakest, wackest ass albums, cd’s, staged reality shows and silly ass products like sex toys and liquor endorsements, Im gonna throw the f up…Who really needs more sex toys and another brand of vodka to rot your liver faster with?   LMAO…And if you want more of something you’ve never experienced before…click on the link and open the door.  Check out more at http://www.crystalcleareye.wordpress.com  Peace

You may not be “trying” but until there is a broader array of actors/hosts/shows/etc representing the ENTIRE spectrum of the black community….you don’t get a choice. You ARE representing black America and I’m sorry; but what you’re showing is shameful! Just keep it real/be honest; the checks are too good to care. I can respect that answer. This other stuff is a cop-out!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/1GrayGal/ 1GrayGal

True but they don’t need to….there are just as many POSITIVE images for the negative image portrayed by Lindsay Lohan. We can’t say that in our community. That’s why I disagree with Kandi’s point.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Kodyak/ Kodyak

True but we are the only race who constantly has to individually represent ourselves in a positive light or we’ll be negatively stereotyped as a whole.   Muslims run a close second but we’ve been going through this longer.

The other problem for these women on reality tv is that if they decided to not act feral, c**ky, outspoken and confrontational while on camera,  the producers would encourage them to act more crazy and if they couldn’t get those results,  they’d pull the plug.   They only hire black people on these kinds of shows because that’s how they want and expect us to act.   This helps reinforce the negative stereotypes and also brings in the viewers who are expecting to see that from us.  You think they hire black women on “Bad Girls Club” just to look pretty?  No, they’re hired to upset the apple cart and instigate confrontations.   These women are paid good money to support the myth that all black people are violent and ghetto, no matter what their background is.

As long as we’re easily manipulated by money and the media controls how the world see us,  that’s just the way it is.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jazzwatch/ jazzwatch

Don’t watch ANY of these shows, and I know MANY Black women don’t act like this,…it’s just nothing more than to offer some BS  they think pass as entertainment when it’s REALLY nothing but another  SHOT to our stomachs, so to speak….

We’re a THREAT to OTHERS, educated or NOT…..

The difference between us and whites is that the white is still the majority, they still make up mainstream culture on a larger scale than we or Hispanics do, and most minority groups will be looked at through a stereotype lens. The old images keep getting recycled..Ever hear one of those Pine-Sol commercials? The black lady who is the spokesperson sounds like she is about to sing a negro spiritual every time she is ready to open a bottle of that s**t.

It’s also unfortunate that sometimes, when talking to a white person who has no idea how to relate to someone black, they fall back on the drive-by views of our culture that they see on MTV, Bravo, and other networks.  Suddenly, they are rolling their necks because they think that’s how we all talk (like chickens) or they think that because I express myself, I am “confrontational”.

So while Ms. Kandi and others in the entertainment industry may not think they represent our race, they do; it’s just that WE regular every day folk feel the brunt of their f**kery.

As much ‘respect’ and ‘love’ that everyone is throwing at Kandi, why is she pimpin’ dildos???  We continue to just fall for anything, and anybody’s mess.  You want or need a role model???  Look in the mirror…get your mind right…get your s**t together…and act like you’ve got a brain!!!

When are people going to stop looking at others to lift them up, when people say that a certain group of people make them look bad, I often wonder why should any one care about what other races think of them, I hear it all the time, how other black people shame the whole race, and how they just bring us down as a people, no, when a person does something wrong it should not have any reflection on anyone else, but themselves, I see ignorant black people all the time being stupid, their actions do not faze me at all, thats on them  if they want to be ignorant, oh well, just like someone mentioned about you don’t hear white people talking about how Lohan is bringing their race down, it is because they think more of themselves than that, People need to stop worrying about what others think of them and work on how God veiws them, because people in all races do bad and stupid things, and that is why the police come in all different races in all places, so if any others where better than us, we will be the only ones in jail and on the news, but we are not, one day  a few of us  where out shopping, and I noticed a few evil eyes balling us from different races, and a some black women as well, one of the ladies stated that they might be looking at her with the burgundy hair, she then said to a female of another race, that I know I look ghetto with my red hair,

I was floored about that comment, and I had to read her for looking down on herself, I don’t care how anyone may look at you, you hold your head up high because you are just as beautiful and important as anyone else  on this earth, and to never downgrade yourself for anybody, because you’re just as special as they think they might be, then some black women started to call us ugly and so on, we ignored them and walked away, because at the end of the day, the ignorance is a reflection on them, not me, or any one else in the black race, so please stop trying to prove yourself  to others, work on improving oneself to God.

Thank YOU, Say it, Say it, Say it, look at oneself, not how you think others make you look.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_67SJUVP7QHZ57KE5YTETAYMC3E Pamela

Say it girl, oh my, you have said nothing but some words of true wisdom, with great intelligence and truth behind them.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_67SJUVP7QHZ57KE5YTETAYMC3E Pamela

Oh, I like this one, except the f word, but I understand your anger and frustration, you are sooooooooooooooooo right, say it my brother, I get so mad when people continue to say, oh those black people on tv bring us down, the other races frown on us, they do that anyway, WHO CARES, if we look back in the past and present  there is a whole lot of trash that people have done to us, so does that make them look bad? so why keep living your life trying to prove yourself to these other races, they hated us from jump street, they went over and brought us to America, and hated us then, our people where living in their own spaces with thier own places minding thier own, so how were we making ourselfs look bad  then, STOP wake up and smell the collards, If there where no black people on tv, they would still hate us, and they are no better, I don’t watch these shows but I know of there exsistence, and they are just as ignorant as they can be, some of them, housewives of orange county, beverly hills, sopranoes, jersy shore, the kardashians and so on, but it seems to be the black people thinking like some others, grouping all of us in one catagory, speaking on how other black people make the whole race look bad, WHY THINK THAT? Focus, I live my life for me and I love me as a black woman, I never hold my head down in shame because of  what other races say or how they  feel about me or my race, and if you step to me downing my people as a whole, I’m going to read you your rights, don’t matter if you’re black or white.
