Italian Vogue has just made an unprecedented move in the fashion industry, creating a web page dedicated entirely to the happenings and accomplishments of women of color.

Vogue is arguably the central and single most important editorial force in the fashion industry. The Italian division just re-designed and launched their website, making everything available in English as well as Italian. Part of the redesign included the addition of a few auxiliary pages, two of which are entitled “Vogue Black” and “Vogue Curvy.”

The “Vogue Black” page seems entirely dedicated to the task of reporting on black talent in the fashion industry. While it is a first for any major editorial powerhouse to create a division focusing exclusively on women of color, this page still seems uncomfortably exclusionary. Why must we be relegated to a separate page Vogue? Nonetheless, this is a huge step in the right direction, as black women have very few outlets that honor and recognize their great contributions to the industry.

The lead story on the web page as of today is “Know Your ‘Fro,” a curious choice, though a valiant effort at trying to place an “Italian” finger (who exactly is programming and writing for this website?) on the pulse of “black” women’s beauty trends.

The page also features an interview with Tyra Banks, where she talks about the coming demise of her talk show and her favorite journalistic moments. She states,

“I asked Hillary Clinton how she feels about herself when she looks in the mirror, like, when her clothes are off and when she looks in the mirror. And everyone’s saying, ‘Oh my god I can’t believe you asked her that. oh my God.’ But I felt so comfortable with her, I felt like she was just a girlfriend at home, so I asked her those questions. I didn’t know I was pushing the envelope by asking her things like that.”

It will be interesting to see how things pan out with this new endeavor, though surely we can respect the fact that Italian Vogue has actually taken us into account. It is among the most progressive magazines in the industry, especially considering the hugely successful “Black Issue.” Still, we can’t help by wonder why such a page was spearheaded by Italian Vogue, and not its American counterpart.

Similarly, Vogue Italia has launched a page entitled “Vogue Curvy” which highlights the accomplishments of and news relevant to Curvy women.

Here is its front page:

Somehow this reminds me of high school lunch rooms where the “nerds” have their own table as do the “popular kids” and the “alternatives.” Only in this case, the black women and the curvy girls have their own web pages.

Whats your opinion?

I LOVE IT!!! I feel as if any progress should be noted as such. It’s great that the modeling industry realizes that women of color and with curves deserve to be recognized and given the SPOTLIGHT not an issue ever other blue moon or drop a name without a picture in an article. I’m looking forward to seeing even more :-)

That is soooooo wonderful!!! I love it !!! Curvy women of color need to be noticed, and recognized. I think it is so sexy being a curvy woman of color…. I loveeeeeeeee me….lol

As a black curvy woman myself I love the concept of what Italian Vogue is doing. Why are other mainstream fashion magazines so slot to catch on! Black is beautiful and so are curves! It’s ok to be larger than a 0 and have boobs, hips and azz!

Kudos to Italian Vogue. The fact this is happening in Italy and not here in the US speak volume. I’m in NYC and there’s so many white skinny models on the run away and this city called itself multiculture whatever. I used to live in Europe and seen black models there more than here and Italian, English, Greek, Irish, Scottish, Swedish men loved black women. Black women are most admired in Europe than here. Don’t forget the late Italian fashion designer Versace favorite model of all time was Naomi Campbell.

DameDivalicious, Great points made about black models being loved everywhere EXCEPT here…. Now umm, someone tell me why a few of the sistahs below me are so happy about this???

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

my bad! Its not even a magazine…It’s just some ONLINE webpage recognition….HAHAHAH! We arent even due a magazine in Vogue’s eyes…yeah yall keep on clappin for scraps..Black folks need to stop being so happy when they are handed a BONE!

Excuse my skepticism but while the idea sounds innovative and forward thinking I can’t help but ask myself did they really need to create a whole other magazine for them to showcase the beauty of the black woman. Is it because the way she looks doesn’t fit into the mainstream Euro-centric idea of beauty. This reminds me of separate but equal America. I think the idea might have been even better if they had incorporated “curvy” black women in their regular magazine and tried to redefine the notions behind what beauty is.

I agree with affirmative action (which is irrelevent to the magazine/website) but I think it is great when an opportunity is available to someone of color. I, myself, am an African American plus size model (size 14), opera singer, and teacher. I understand that the advancement of people of color in areas dominated by whites come in very small incraments. Some of you ladies and gents may see it as a “scrap” or “bone” but I see it as an opportunity to step up to the plate, whether the “bone” or “scap” is offered or not. Everyone knows that Rome wasn’t built in a day, and negativity or outcries of injustice do not accomplish much without counterproductivity…one interesting thing about such arenas is that when people of color are given the opportunity to shine, they MUST be the BEST…not mediocre. I think its a call to give your all and really represent what the race/gender/fill-in-the-blank is really capable of and set a high standard of excellence.

Either way, one publication, website, or public domain can accomodate or “sum up” everything women of color represent. Vanity Fair decides to “white wash” their cover, and Italian Vogue decides to give Toccarra a feature spread, then create webpage dedicated to women of color….are they both wrong??????

This is a good start. Black History Month started out as Black History week. Let’s support it. We all know money walks and B.S. talks!!! Put the black dollar to work.I’m sure they want to see how it would be received first before they made it an entity all its own.

Sorry for the typo….”Either way, one publication, website, or public domain can NOT accomodate or “sum up” everything women of color represent.”

I don’t see it as much of a problem….as long as they plan a way of incorporating these images of Black models and Curvy models into their main page as well. I hope it’s just not a temporary fix to shut anyone up or pacify ppl who were complaining.

Well if they put pictures of you, in their mags, they are just saying they recognize you for your purchasing power, which affects their bottom line. Don’t confuse business with personal feelings. Many people can overlook their distaste for you, when money is involved- for example, marriage in America. :)

The most ridiculous crock of sh%t I’ve sen in a long time. So let me get this straight. The same magazine who sets trends that thousands if not millions of black are spending all of their money on is not diversefieid enough to invoporate these same women into the exisiting mag??? Wtf thatmeans that we can buy the s**t they make (which happens to be tailored to fit smaller frames that most black women don’t have) but we are not good enough to be included in the mag they have already. Its like buy this so that u too will be fashionable but, don’t expect ur ass to be in the mag! We don’t understand the power of a dollar. S**t instead of venting on here I’m gonna go to the vouge site and do that.
