Health is a 365-days-a-year struggle. But I think most of us would be lying if we didn’t admit to wanting to look extra good in the summer, as we shed of our coats and jackets and replace them with shorts, skirts, dresses, and crop tops. Between the endless barbecues and rooftop happy hours, staying healthy in the summer can prove to be a challenge. Here are five sneaky ways to be healthier:

1. Add fruit to your water to drink more of it.

Water seems to get a bad reputation for being “boring.” And thus, makes many people less likely to drink it. But adding fruit to water gives it a little flavor for your taste buds. Plus it just looks cool.

2. Start your meals with something spicy.

Although summer may not seem like the time for spicy food, it is always the time for spicy food! More importantly, spices such as peppers, help with metabolism and they force you to eat slower.

3. Go for “walk dates” with friends instead of lunches or dinner.

Because the weather is finally nice out, it’s worth making the most of it. Now although I will always advocate for doing some form of intense physical activity, if it’s just not up your alley, take up walking with friends as a way to catch up in lieu of meeting for meals or drinks.

4. Eat some vegetables before you go out to dinner, to a barbecue, etc.

Most of us have a tendency to look forward to a really amazing meal by NOT eating many hours before it. That’s a bad idea and often why we tend to overeat. Instead, steam some of your favorite vegetables and it’ll make a difference in how much you eat at dinner.

5. Pack your treats into individual servings.

The thing about the healthiest people is that they know everything is about moderation. So enjoy that cookie or brownie or slice of cake…just don’t eat the entire thing. Whether you’re making it yourself or buying it, package your treats into individual servings. You’re more likely to stick that one serving that way!
