Six-year-old, Salecia Johnson from Georgia was handcuffed and charged with assault after an outburst in her kindergarten class. Yes, you read that correctly. Johnson allegedly pushed two other students and was sent to the principle’s office. Obviously her punishment didn’t end there.
When Johnson was in the principle’s office, she began tearing items off the school principal’s office walls and was throwing furniture. The police report says Johnson knocked over a shelf that injured the principal. The report says Johnson was reportedly biting a doorknob and attempting to break a glass frame while jumping on top of a paper shredder.
“Our policy is that any detainee transported to our station in a patrol vehicle is to be handcuffed in the back. There is no age discrimination on that rule,” 13WMAZ reports that Milledgeville Chief of Police, Dray Swicord. Johnson was said to be handcuffed for her safety as well as the safety of others–because it’s so much that a six-year-old can do when they’re angry. It’s because of this policy that the officer responsible for detaining the six-year-old is not under investigation and happily gets to keep his job.

“The student was never placed in a holding cell or jail cell and the student’s safety was of the utmost importance,” Swicord said. Well, let’s give him a round of applause for not putting the baby in the cell! *side eye* After the kindergartener was handcuffed, she was taken to the local police station and charged with simple assault and damage to property. However, because of her young age, Johnson will reportedly not be prosecuted.
This sounds like a job for the always busy civil rights activist and MSNBC host, Rev. Al Sharpton and Johnson’s parents are moving full stream ahead with protesting. Johnson’s parents are trying to organize a community protest against the officer’s actions. As they should!
What do you think about the six-year-old being handcuffed and taken into custody? Let’s discuss on Twitter @Rhapsodani.
