Justice Edward McLaughlin is making headlines for a controversial statement made during a sentencing. The Manhattan judge told Tareek Arnold who was on trial for murder the following:

“Black lives matter, I have heard it, I know it, but the sad fact is in this courtroom, so often what happens is manifestations of the fact that black lives don’t matter to black people with guns.”

In the summer of 2015, Arnold, 24, shot Jamal McCaskill four times at point blank range. In efforts to seem as if he wasn’t a “snitch”, McCaskill shockingly testified during the trial where he said Arnold was not the assailant despite surveillance footage catching the incident on camera.

“The video shows that Mr. McCaskill is an abject liar,” said the judge.

When Arnold was initially arrested for the shooting, he was able to escape, despite being handcuffed. He was on the run for over a month until cops nabbed him again.

During sentencing, Arnold’s lawyer, Mark Jankowitz requested that his client receive the minimum sentence of 10 years, so that Arnold’s 1-year-old son wouldn’t have to grow up without a father.

In response, Judge McLaughlin was less than empathetic when he said, “Do not ask a judge in this room, in this building, or in this system to somehow make amends for the people who commit violent acts and who by their violent acts wind up leaving people orphaned, abandoned, fatherless, etc.”

Arnold was convicted of escape, gun possession and assault to which he received 24 to 26 years in prison.
