The children of the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr have moved one step forward to end the legal proceedings against each other. The Estate of Martin Luther King Jr Inc., where the late civil right’s leaders sons Martin Luther III is the chairman and Dexter Scott King is the president and CEO, dropped the lawsuit against the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, where their sister Rev. Bernice King is the CEO. The suit was heading to trial next week. The King brothers and their sister got into a dispute over their father’s prized possessions which prompted them to file suit against Bernice. The Associated Press is reporting the estate gave permission to the King Center worldwide, nonexclusive, royalty-free licensing use to use King’s likeness, image, name to publicly exhibit his spoken words and writings.

In April 2013, an audit was conducted where the estate claimed hundreds of items belonging to King were being kept in an unsecure and unsafe conditions at the King Center, which encroached upon the terms of their agreement. In a released statement Dexter said he and his brother, “had a change of heart” over the lawsuit and shows the dismissal is an act of good faith where they want to work out their issues privately and not in a courtroom. Dexter stated:

I understand my brother’s apprehension days before a public trial, and I share those concerns.  None of us want to see the legacy of my parents, or our dysfunction, out on public display. We do have some very serious issues to address and resolve, and I hope that we will be successful in doing that amongst and with each other.  None of us want to see the legacy of my parents, or our dysfunction, out on public display.

Amen. Meanwhile, Bernice’s lawsuit surrounding the ownership over her father’s traveling Bible and 1964 Nobel Peace Prize medal is still in the works and is slated for trial next month. Bernice was very vocal over her brothers selling the items, where they voted against her wishes to part with the medal and bible. Here’s hoping they can work it out.
