In honor of Dr. King’s holiday, Bernice King is calling for a “no shots fired” day and ringing church bells in support of non-violence.

During a recent interview with Reuters, the daughter of the slain U.S. civil rights leader said her father’s message of non-violence should resonate as we celebrate his 85th birthday this Monday, a federal holiday.

“America has an enormous appetite for violence,” she said. “I don’t know why we have such an affinity for that, but I do know it has to stop.’

Bernice, who is the CEO of the Atlanta-based Martin Luther King Center, added: “Dr. King’s philosophy of non-violence is more relevant, I believe, than it was 10 years ago.”

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People agreed. According to reports, the Atlanta branch of the NAACP is taking stance against America’s culture of violence with its new a gun buyback program. The organization hopes to get 1,000 weapons off the city’s streets.
