The San Francisco police department has some serious ‘splaining to do. A recent study conducted by the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice has found unfathomable disparities in arrest rates for Black women in the Golden City.
Research shows that black women in San Francisco constitute nearly 50 percent of women’s arrests, yet only make up 5.8 percent of the female population. That means that African American women are being detained at a rate almost 14 times higher than women of other races. And don’t assume that this is just a result of some miraculous boost in Black women’s criminal activity. Just three years ago, it was noted that African American women’s criminal activity had been the lowest in 30 years.
