Here at HelloBeautiful we just love celebrating Black love. Every Wednesday we profile newly engaged couples as they describe the moment he decided to “Put A Ring On It”.

His Story:
The very first time I saw Reana, I had a funny feeling she was going to be extraordinarily special to me. I felt like I was being drawn to her. I approached her and tried to get her to talk with me for as long as I could and FINALLY worked up the nerve to ask for her number. It worked!  Six months later we were living together and I was already planning for our future.

The day I decided to propose, I was a nervous wreck. I got home early and had the ring in my pocket. I knew I was ready to propose that day, but I didn’t know when, where or how. When she got home from work, I could tell she was exhausted. I asked her to jump in the car with me while I drove to get my mail. It was the only thing I could think of! She was NOT happy because all she wanted to do was go inside and rest. She asked multiple questions on the way and it was making me extremely nervous.

When we arrived at the mailbox, I asked her to walk with me. I laughed to myself because I knew she didn’t expect a thing. She was tired and too busy fussing and asking questions to be suspicious of anything. I stopped, hugged her and proceeded to tell her how much I loved her and that I wanted to spend my life with her. Then I popped the question. Between tears, she managed to finally say yes!

Her Story:

I’ve always heard people say, “When you find love you will know,” but I never really understood what that meant until I met Omar.  I met him while shopping for a car.  He was my salesman and when I met him I thought, “What a cute nerd!” He asked me out and I figured one date wouldn’t hurt.  Turns out we had lived in the same apartment complex for two years! After a few short months we decided to move in together. I knew we were moving quickly, but it all seemed so right.

He proposed on a hot, steamy June day. Between managing a new job, a new home and a new city, I was TIRED.  I got home and he was already there, which NEVER happens.  He asked me to ride with him to his old mailbox.  It never dawned on me what he was up to.  I was just upset because I know he could tell that I was exhausted.  Since I was tired and irritable, I asked a ton of questions in the car: Where are we going?  Why are we going there?  Is it legal to still have a mail key?  I’ll admit, there were a few curse words issued. I was acting like a bit of a fool.  I couldn’t believe he was being so selfish by not considering how tired I was.

As we pulled up, he asked me to walk with him to the mailbox.  I snatched his keys and said, “Why don’t I read your mail for you too?” I was angry and he knew it. He turned me around and asked for a hug.  He knows that usually calms me down but that day I was too irritated.  He hugged me anyway and said, “I remember you said if someone proposes you wanted them to be creative.”  My heart was racing and the tears started flowing.  He continued by saying, “I wanted to bring you back to the place where we fell in love.”  He let go of me and I could see the wrapped box in his hand.  I know this sounds ungrateful, but I was so nervous that the first thing I thought to say was, “Who wrapped the box?”  Yes, I was caught off guard and completely surprised, but I said yes right after that!
