One of the three white men involved in the November 12 murder of California man William Sims has been arrested, authorities say. It’s believed that the 28-year-old was targeted because he was African-American.
According to The Grio, late Wednesday night, Daniel Porter-Kelly was arrested and charged with robbery, murder and a hate crime, while deputies are still looking for 32-year-old Ray Simons and 31-year-old Daniel Ortega. Authorities believe that the two suspects are armed and dangerous. Meanwhile, Ortega’s mother was arrested on suspicion of interfering with the investigation.
Sims, who was an incredibly talented pianist and musician, was jumped inside a pool hall in El Sobrante, California, Heavy noted. Sims’ body was later discovered by the police around 2:11 a.m., after being beaten and shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sims’ sister, Stacey, told the San Francisco Chronicle that her brother was an intense music lover and everyone who knew him, loved him.
“He loved music. He loved making friends. He was the best brother a sister could ever have. It’s been very difficult. It still seems unreal,” she said.

Some in the Bay Area have complained that the local press has not covered the issue enough. In addition, they have taken issue that the police stated in a recent press release that Sims “had no gang ties and no criminal history,” stressing that he was the victim of the hate crime and that shouldn’t matter, Heavy noted.
Violence like this seems to be on the rise after the election. Earlier this week, HelloBeautiful reported on the death of a 15-year-old West Virginia boy who was shot and killed by a 62-year-old white man after they got into a verbal confrontation outside of a local Dollar General.
