Did you know this upcoming week is Black Breastfeeding Week? The celebration begins on Tuesday and will go through till next week Monday, and this is the third year the weekly event will be celebrated. The purpose of the week is to raise awareness and support for breastfeeding in Black American communities across the nation.
According to the website, blackbreastfeedingweek.org, the theme this year is Lift Every Baby. And on Saturday, August 29th, communities across the nation, will be participating in lifting up their babies according to their local schedules. This is such a heartwarming idea, isn’t it?
According to the Milwaukee Community Journal, Kimberly Seals Allers, the co-founder of Black Breastfeeding Week, said the following about the event:
“We are seeing our children lives being undermined, undervalued, and under attack by negative media stereotypes. As parents and advocates we are excited to make this powerful, visual demonstration to the world that we lift up, support and cherish our babies. If you can lift your baby, whether he is 8 months old or 8 years old, then we want to see you at the Lift Up.”
