Update:

Shetamia Taylor is praising the cops who used their bodies as shields to protect her and her son during the Dallas shooting that took the lives of five police officers.

Taylor shielded her child after she was shot in the leg during the melee. That’s when officers responding to the scene risked their lives to shield her. Taylor described their heroic efforts during a recent press conference.

“My son went to grab me, but I was already shot so I grabbed him and lay on top of him,” she explained. “The officer got on top of me and covered me and my son. Another cop [was] at my feet and another [stood] by us and they protected us. I saw another officer get shot in front of me.”

Taylor and her son made it through the ordeal, while others perished.

“I saw an officer tell another officer that an officer didn’t make it. And I [was] celebrating my kids,” she said, stopping in mid-sentence to wipe away tears.

Original Story:

A Texas mother was one of the victims of the Dallas shooting yesterday, taking a bullet to shield her young son as snipers opened fire on police and protestors Thursday night.

Shetamia Taylor, 37, was with her four sons, ages 12 to 17, whom she brought with her to teach them about peaceful protesting. It was there, when a rogue shooter opened fire, that she acted as a human shield for her 15-year-old son.

Her sister, Theresa Williams, told the New York Daily News she was leaving the protest with the boys when shots rang out.

“She jumped on top to cover him on the ground as she pushed him between two cars on the curb,” Williams said. “All she could think about was her three other boys — where are they at?”

Taylor was shot in the leg, and her 15-year-old son brought her to the hospital, where she underwent surgery Friday.

But the mother was not only concerned for her children’s well-being, she was also worried for the families of the victims.

“She’s not so much worried about the gunshot wound she has on her leg,” ABC News quoted her sister as saying. “We’re watching the news in the hospital room, and all she do is say, ‘Lord, be with those families of the police officers.’ And that’s what she kept repeating.”

Taylor is expected to make a full recovery.
