New Jersey State Police are looking into the death of a Black man who was savagely beaten while he was restrained.
Phillip White died on Tuesday, not long after police took him into custody. Once he’d been apprehended around 11 a.m., the 32-year-old man was pummeled by cops, who also unleashed a K-9 unit on him. Eye witness Ricardo Garcia told NBA 10 that it was a pretty gruesome scene.
“They punched him, stomped him, kicked him, and then they let the dog out of the car,” he recalled, adding that cops actually knocked Phillip unconscious. “The dog bit him on his face and around his body. There’s no call for that. Once a man is handcuffed and unconscious, you should have stuck him in the patrol car and take him to the police station. Instead they decided to beat him right here.”

According to The Daily Journal, a different witness claims that Phillip was resisting arrest. It’s unclear what Phillip was put in cuffs for, and the Vineland Police Department has yet to offer an explanation as to why he was taken into custody. VPD Police Chief Timothy Codispoti did offer some words of condolence from the department, though.
While this has not been confirmed, his family is still seeking answers in his death. Why, what he was doing, I don’t know,” Phillip’s aunt, Valerie White, told NBC 10. “I’m trying to get answers and closure now. He lived a street life, but he was a human being. Bottom line.”
Hopefully the investigation by the New Jersey State Police will turn up some answers.
