As a wedding planner, I often see brides get caught up in what was really big in the past. It’s easy to do. If you aren’t sure of the new wedding trends, you just do what you think people are SUPPOSED to do at weddings. I meet brides who want to focus on white linens, chair covers and long head tables.

I often tell brides at the seminars I teach to avoid having a 1984 wedding. You don’t want your wedding to look like a flashback from a year that should be left in the past (especially when it comes to the look of a wedding.)

Below, I’ve listed several elements that will make your wedding look dated:

All White Everything — There’s nothing wrong with white at your wedding…especially if you’re going for a “white hot” concept or a chic, urban look. But if you’re just doing white because you think that’s what EVERYONE does for a wedding, you might be dating the look of your event. White invitations, white linens, white flowers can look very….blah. Inject some color! Rent some linens that will give you a bright color. Let your bouquet reflect your wedding colors. Invitations can be a fun place to inject color. While an ecru or ivory invite with black ink can be a very classic look, an interesting invitation mailed in a colorful envelope will stand out.

Chair Covers — Whenever I see the bag chair covers (the ones that slip over the chair) with the sash that ties around the back of the chair, I immediately think of the eighties. Brides often get VERY concerned with the chairs at their reception venue. You can always rent chairs that compliment the look of your event. If that’s not in the budget, don’t sweat the chairs. Once the people are in the seats, the chairs disappear! I would rather see you spend your chair cover budget on event lighting or renting gorgeous linens for your tables. Read More Tips
