Normally telling jokes, funny man and talk show host Steve Harvey got pretty serious in the recent issue of People Magazine where he talked about his past bouts with homelessness.

The Emmy winner told the entertainment and lifestyle publication that while he now has a $100 million empire, thanks to his books, films and numerous television show, that wasn’t always the case. Back in the 80s, he lived out of his Ford Tempo for three years.

“It kills me when I hear very successful people say, ‘I always knew I would get here,’ ” he told the magazine.  “I didn’t. I always hoped I would get somewhere, but this is above and beyond. My imagination didn’t even go this big.”

He referred to these years as an “ugly” and “painful” period: He had quit full-time job to become a comedian, he and his wife separated and he was bringing home as little as $50 a week.

“Everybody has a moment when they turn back, when you say to yourself, ‘This is too much.’ I had it on several occasions,” he said.

One of those incidents included hitting rock bottom as he hid in a hotel restroom in hopes to wash up.

“I sat down and started crying, but a voice said, ‘If you keep going, I’m going to take you places you’ve never been,’ It was like God said, ‘Don’t quit, you’re almost there,’” he admitted.

Talk about a story of resilience, faith and success!
