Top knots have been all the rage this season and for good reason: they’re chic, simple and a nice break from wearing your hair out in the elements. They’re especially good for our afrobeauties who want to give their hair a break with a cute protective style.
Taren Guy, popular YouTube vlogger & our resident expert, has all the steps you need to make that gorgeous high bun that you can wear from your office to your fanciest occasions.
Start off by dampening the hair using a spray bottle with water, focusing on the edges. Then, add product to the edges as well to smooth them out before pulling your hair up.
Now, apply some hair gel; Taren recommends African Pride’s Silky Smooth Edges. Pull your hair up some more and brush it to get your edges down in the back and in the front.
Then, scoop the hair onto the top of your head and tie it in a ponytail. Taren likes to use the Mixed Chicks’ Spring Bands to keep her hair from getting too tangled and messy.
Take the remaining hair and tuck it away with lots of bobby pins. After everything is gathered, give your edges another brush and spritz, dab on any extra product as necessary and keep tucking away any stray curls with your remaining bobby pins.
That’s all there is to this super cute updo. See Taren, our fabulous naturalista, put together her top knot in the video above.
