*UPDATE* The death toll in Nepal has raised to over 3,000. According to BBC, at least 3,617 people are now known to have died in a massive earthquake which hit Nepal on Saturday, police say. More than 6,500 people have been injured.

Our prayers are up for Nepal. Today, the South Asian country experienced a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 and depth of 9.3 miles. It is the most shallow and damaging quake size Nepal has had in the last eighty years. According to the country’s Ministry of Home Affairs, approximately 1,457 people have died so far as a result of the natural disaster.

The quake mainly hit between the capital of Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara. Triggered shakeups also occurred as far as Mount Everest and areas in the nearby Himalayan countries of Tibet, Bangladesh and New Delhi in India.

In Kathmandu, the BBC reports that homes and historic buildings, landmarks and temples crumbled unto the streets. “Mounds of debris” and rubble blanketed what was just the other day filled with local shoppers and wide-eyed tourists.

Once the quake subsided, locals, visitors and medical workers have been together to rescue victims hit by the damage. Sadly there have been more bodies found dead, killed instantly by the quake, than those that have been injured but are still alive.

Pop-up medical stations appeared for the wounded and deceased. Many Nepalese are still in search or trying to get in touch with their loved ones they feel might have affected.
