Fox 8 News anchor Kristi Capel has been suspended for three days after using the racist slur “jigaboo” to describe the music accompanying Lady Gaga’s stellar “Sound Of Music” performance at the Oscars this year. In the segment, you could tell that Capel was trying to come up with a word to describe the loud music during Gaga’s performance. But jigaboo? Maybe she didn’t realize it was a slur? You know who didn’t? Her Black co-anchor, Wayne Dawson, who literally sat there and laughed through her entire faux pas as if he didn’t feel the stab in his chest that many, if not all Black people feel when they hear a racial slur.

But that’s not even the most entertaining part of this story. Capel sought the counsel of religion to help her start the healing and forgiveness process. First, she issued an apology on Twitter, saying:

The TV network 100 percent supported Capel and claimed:

“This incident has prompted thousands of social media comments and emails from across the viewing area and the nation. Unlike many who have commented, co-anchor Wayne Dawson and many of us at Fox 8 have the advantage of knowing Kristi Capel personally and her work in our community,” the station stated. “It is for that reason that we join with the pastors she met with on Tuesday to begin the process of forgiveness and healing.”

Pastors? Forgiveness and healing? What and what? While Capel’s slip up was certainly bad, it didn’t seem intentional. She did the right thing by apologizing, but to seek religious counsel? Girl, it’s not that serious! Capel’s not the only person who publicly effed up and needed to grovel by making grand gesture to appear sorrier than they ever were before they slipped up:

1. Paula Deen: She hired the real-life Olivia Pope, Judy Smith, after making that terrible mistake of using the “N-word” on and around her Black employees.

2. Barneys: After being blamed for racial profiling its Black shoppers and receiving a ton of negative press, Barneys has decided to apologize and then hire a diversity expert to help them better understand the Black experience.

3. Giuliana Rancic: She tried to be funny and call out “It” girl, Zendaya Coleman‘s faux locs and ended up looking like a racist jerk. Her apology was a weak tweet, but it was her televised mea culpa on E! that made us cringe. She has no idea what racism or stereotyping is. Maybe she’ll hire that same diversity expert Barneys hired?

We’re sure to be adding to this list of weak apologies as the stories are sure to keep rolling in.
