It has been three years since the untimely passing of R&B legend Whitney Houston, and yet she’s still touching many lives around her. Whitney’s death also made some start to realize they wanted to leave a lasting impression with the world and really question how you would want to be remembered. Gabrielle Union has revealed recently the late singer’s passing made her realize she wanted more out of life and her career. In an interview with the Associated Press, Gabrielle admits Whitney’s death made her question and think about how she’d like her history to be thought of.

It just kind of made everyone say, `What do you want your legacy to be?’And I really doubled down on `I only want to do things that I care about, that mean something.’

So, no, I don’t want to play perfect characters that are wholesome role models … and have all the right answers.

Welcome to Being Mary Jane. Gabrielle claims this decision lead for her to seek out more roles that feature characters being less than perfect and insanely flawed, just like her alter ego on the hit BET series. Gabrielle also reveals playing television journalist Mary Jane Paul, who’s professional life is soaring but personal life in shambles allows her acting abilities to strengthen and grow.  According to Gabby:

I felt like a lazy actress. … You get complacent, and when the checks are coming in it’s like, `Eh, maybe I’ll get to challenge myself next week.’ The next thing you know years have gone by and you’ve not really done anything that feeds your soul.
