Jacqueline Woodson was the recipient of the 2015 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work In YA Fiction for her book Brown Girl Dreaming.
Brown Girl Dreaming is a poetry collection that has the author recalling her days as a young girl, growing up in South Carolina, or the “Jim Crow” south, while also expressing the beginning stages of her love for reading and writing. In November 2014, Dreaming was short-listed for the National Book Award, which was Woodson’s nomination.
Woodson is a revered author who was won three Newbury Honors and celebrated novels and collections include Miracle’s Boys and After Tupac & D Foster. She is currently a Brooklynite. A fun fact about her, as written on her website: “I can only write with my notebook turned sideways. When I was a kid, I wrote with it turned upside down.”
