You may have peeped a whole body vibration machine in your local gym yet had no clue how this shaky platform worked. Well you can sit, stand, or lie on these bad boys all in the name of fitness. By performing traditional exercises on these vibrating platforms energy is transmitted into your body (no – it’s not like getting shocked) therefore forcing your muscles to contract and relax dozens of times each second.

Simply put, the shaky base beneath you makes your muscles think you’re falling, so in turn your natural “stress reflex” kicks in. Read, you have to work harder to keep your balance and form intact. Plus whole body vibration training recruits the hard-to-train fast-twitch (type 2) muscle fibers – which automatically results in both increased strength and power.

So while performing traditional exercises such as squats, lunges, pushups etc. on these vibrating platforms is ideal, simply standing on these hertz-powered machines can do the trick too. The vibrations are set at a specific frequency and amplitude. Frequency is measured in hertz (Hz) and refers to the number of vibrations per second. For example, at 25 Hz, the targeted muscles will receive 25 cycles of vibration per second, which means they’ll contract and relax 25 times each second. The amplitude is measured in millimeters (mm) and refers to the extent of the vertical displacement of the platform during vibrations. The higher the frequency and amplitude, the greater the intensity and work on the muscles.

So try out that lonely machine at your local gym and enjoy benefits such as increased circulation, muscle strength and flexibility; better range of motion; core conditioning and stability; and faster muscle recovery after working out.

Feel free to shake it at the night club beautiess, but pass on fitness club shaking via whole body vibration machines if you are: pregnant, have a pacemaker (or other electronic implants), have a history of tumors, thrombosis or seizures. The frequencies these machines emit can cause complications so pass on this trend if any of these apply to you boo.
