*Grabs popcorn* Things are heating up on “The View” and not in a good way. The show’s resident moderator, Whoopi Goldberg and new co-host, Rosie O’Donnell got into a verbal altercation after last Thursday’s show. According to The Daily Mail, Whoopi cut O’Donnell off during a “Hot Topic” segment about spanking your children. O’Donnell had explained to Whoopi how passionate she was about the topic when they were backstage.

However, once the segment started going too long, Whoopi was told by producers through the ISD monitor she’s required to wear in her ear that it was time for commercial. Rosie reportedly refuses to wear said monitor, so the control room is unable to speak with her, which in turn means that O’Donnell never knows what’s going on behind the scenes. Rosie took Whoopi’s abrupt cut off as a snub and reacted as if she’d been wronged.

Whoopi tried to explain to O’Donnell that if she were to wear a monitor, she’d know what’s going on. As soon as the commercial break started, Rosie took the handheld microphone (typically used for audience engagement) and spoke directly to Whoopi, reportedly saying that her feelings were hurt, she was very upset by it and “didn’t appreciate” what “Whoopi  had done.” Whoopi responded by saying: “This isn’t the time for this, Rosie.”

Instead of dropping the conflict, O’Donnell continued to complain about Whoopi in front of the audience: “Well I just don’t appreciate you saying that you were going to do something and not doing it. It makes me upset and I just don’t want to have to go through this,” O’Donnell reportedly complained. Whoopi stuck to her original sentiment that the timing for Rosie’s tantrum was bad, but Rosie continued. Losing her patience, Whoopi reportedly exclaimed, “F*** it, I told you to leave it alone and you just don’t want to listen. If you want to go there Rosie, I will dammit. I’m really sick of your s***!”

*Chomps on popcorn* Things went quiet in the studio and that’s when comedic relief and fellow co-host, Rosie Perez chimed in and made light of the tense situation by saying: “Oh s***, Twitter is going to be off the hook now. They’re about to get it!”

Once the show came back from commercial, both Whoopi and O’Donnell were able to be professionals again and finished out the show. But here’s the thing–“The View” has hardly ever been without drama between co-hosts, especially since O’Donnell and fellow co-host, Nicole Wallace hosted a test show with two fill-in hosts, in search of good chemistry.  “I think Whoopi and I were both a little shocked at having to do a chemistry test,” O’Donnell told Variety. “I don’t know if there’s a way to test that. It felt very negative and competitive.”
This is O’Donnell’s second go-round with “The View.” The first time around she infamously quit the show live during an on-air fight with former co-host Elisabeth Hasselback. It was widely reported that Whoopi begged ABC to terminate her contract with the network and pay her the remaining $10 million on her deal to go home, as she hates working on the show now, particularly with all of the changes.
Relations between Rosie and Whoopi behind the scenes at “The View” have been tense since the beginning of the season, as sources believe that O’Donnell really wants to be in her old moderator role and is having a hard time playing second fiddle to Whoopi. With this blow up, that’s totally believable. It seems that Rosie feels entitled to lead the show, even though Whoopi remains in the driver seat. Having two very strong, very bossed up personalities on one show make for spirited debates, but those powerful egos get in the way too. Hmm, we’re definitely going to have to pop some more popcorn for this one!
