Facebook COO, Sheryl Sandberg created the #BanBossy campaign because she’s loathes the use of the word “bossy” to describe young girls who are assertive. So in the #BanBossy campaign, Sandberg wants people to ban the word and all its negative connotations and expand their labels to things like, “feminist” or “leader.”
“I’m not bossy. I’m the boss, Beyonce boldly states in a #BanBossy video. I don’t need to give Beyonce more props that she’s already got, but this one-liner is the best part of this campaign, because it still allows for young girls to boss up.
Cultural theorist, bell hooks saw an issue with this campaign, just like I did. Instead of banning bossy, she’s encouraging young women to #BeBossy. For many, being called bossy is a negative experience and shows an obvious declaration of gender discrimination. But for others, like myself–it’s liberating, motivating and powerful.
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve had a mouth that ran a mile a minute and was called “mouthy,” “bossy,” “loud” and my mom would always say that my mouth is going to get me in trouble one day. So I learned to shut my mouth, shrink myself down and avoid being “mouthy.” It’s taken me over 15 years to break that habit and embrace my bossiness. Now, I consider it power and I tap into it whenever I see fit. To me, that’s bossing up.
Women are often told how we should behave, even as grown women. One of the campaign’s spokeswomen, Beyonce, has made a career of running the world, being a “Grown Woman” and asking everyone who is beneath her (who is everyone) to “Bow Down.” Female empowerment doesn’t come from changing the world’s vocabulary, it comes from enrolling young women into believing in their own power–the power that would allow them to speak and act on their beliefs without care of what the critics will say, because there’s always going to be critics whether we #BanBossy or not.
Michelle Malkin, a conservative syndicated columnist, and author feels me on this flawed #BanBossy campaign and said:
Girls, here’s the truth about the Ban Bossy campaign: It’s being spearheaded by a privileged group of elite feminists who have a very vested interest in stoking victim politics and exacerbating the gender divide. They actually encourage dependency and groupthink while paying lip service to empowerment and self-determination.
If we keep attempting to censor the younger generations from the negativity, how do expect them to develop thick skin to deal with the haters? What do you beauties think–#BeBossy or #BanBossy? Let’s chat @Rhapsodani.
