February marks Black History Month and Lifetime plans to kick of the 28-day celebration with two all-new original movies.
The Gabby Douglas Story will premiere on February 1st. The biopic features an all-star cast of Regina King, Epatha Merkerson, Sydney Mikayla and “Everybody Hates Chris” star Imani Hakim as the two-time Olympic gold medalist.
According to a press release, the film “tells the inspiring true story of the international gymnastics phenomenon who overcame overwhelming odds to become the first African-American ever to be named Individual All-Around Champion in artistic gymnastics at the Olympic Games.”
On February 22nd, Lifetime will air the film adaptation of The Trip to Bountiful. The all-black Broadway revival stars Cicely Tyson, Vanessa Williams, Blair Underwood and Keke Palmer.
In addition to the highly-anticipated premieres, the network will also launch the Gabby Douglas Raise the Bar Pledge, a contest to encourage students across the county to raise the bar in their own lives. Learn more details here.

1. Lola Monroe welcomes son
Lola Monroe is officially a mommy. The model-turned-rapper has just welcomed a son with Bad Boy rapper King Los. The proud parents tweeted the good news on Tuesday night. “To God be the Glory!” Lola wrote. “Our royal gift has arrived!!! I just gave birth to our bab! LOVE.” Pushing out a baby is hard work, so Los took watch over their newborn son when Lola needed a nap. “God did some amazing things for us today!” Los tweeted. “Chillin wit my son while he and his momma @Thee_LoLaMonroe sleep.”
2. Meshell Ndegeocello to honor Langston Hughes
Meshell Ndegeocello is going to be paying tribut to poet Langston Hughes legacy later this month. It’s been announced that she’s been added to Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz. The multimedia concert will be held March 23.
3. Pope Francis named first Latino pontiff
The Roman Caholic church has a new leader. CNBC reports that Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio has been named pope. At 76 years old, he is the first Latino pope and he will go by the name Pope Francis. During his time in the church, Pope Francis has established himself as being a deeply conservative priest. He is openly opposed to gay adoption and has called same sex marriage the work of the devil, labeling it a “destructive attack on God’s plan.”
4. Derrick Rose offers to pay for Jonylah Watkins’ funeral
Chicago Bulls player Derrick Rose is offering some help to the family of 6-month-old Jonylah Watkins. The baby was gunned down Monday when a shooter took aim at her father while he was changing her. The Inquisitor reports that as a new dad, Derrick is sending his condolences to the family and has even offered to pay for Jonylah’s funeral costs.
5. Alicia Keys does ‘Poetic Justice’ with Kendrick Lamar
Alicia Keys did her best impression of Janet Jackson when she brought out Kendrick Lamar to perform his song “Poetic Justice.”
6. Walter Jackson upset about Bravo snub
Walter Jackson is feeling a little left out. The transportation executive is supposedly miffed that he wasn’t asked to be part of the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” season 5 reunion. His disatorous relationship with Kenya Moore was a major plot line on the show, and it garnered even more attention when he accused Kenya of hiring him to be onscreen boyfriend. Kenya’s gotten to have her say on the matter a few times on Bravo, but Walter hasn’t gotten the same opportunity and he’s mad about it. Noting that he wasn’t onhand for the “RHOA” reunion taping, he tweeted, “Yeah I think TV meaning (Br_) is scared of me, they can’t control me and they can’t tell me what to say, So that’s y they WON’T INVITE me.”
7. TC Carson covers ‘Lost Without You’
Hey there, Kyle Barker! “Living Single” star TC Carson popped up recently at a jazz club to remind everyone that he’s got some serious pipes! Check out his oh-so-smooth rendition of “Lost Without You.” Kyle would be proud!
8. Rihanna has the flu
The show did not go on in Baltimore for Rihanna. E! News reports that the singer had to cancel the Baltimore stop of her Diamonds Tour because not only is she getting over laryngitis she’s also battling the flu. Rihanna’s scheduled to perform in Philadelphia tonight, but it’s not clear whether that show will be shut down right now.
9. Gabby Douglas publishes second memoir
Olympc Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas is giving you an inside look on what she’s been up to since her historic win at the 2012 London Olympics. Last year, she put out her first autobiography “Grace, Gold & Glory: My Leap of Faith.” Now she’s ready to release her second memoir! Titled “Raising The Bar,” the Zondervan published book is slated to hit retailers next month. According to Zondervan, “Raising The Bar” will take readers inside “what it’s like to be an everyday teen with a not-so-everyday life.”
