Amy Carey-Jones and Valarie Carey, the sisters of Miriam Carey–the unarmed Black woman who was shot and killed in our nation’s capital after a confusing high-speed chase–appeared on “Today” with Matt Lauer to offer some clarity on the tragic event.
The sisters claim Carey’s erratic driving that kicked off the series of events that ultimately resulted in her death, happened because the 34 year-old licensed dental hygienist was afraid. “My sister was fleeing, she was trying to get out of there,” Valarie said. “If you hear gun shots, it’s like, ‘I’m afraid. I don’t want to be here. I want to get out of here. I have a baby in a car.”
“We still feel there’s another story than what we’re being told,” Amy admitted. I am right there with her. While news outlets report that Carey drove through a White House barricade, starting the entire scenario, to date there hasn’t been video or photographic evidence of her crashing through the barricade. There is, however, this:
Carey’s bout with postpartum depression has been offered in reports as one explanation for the tragedy. A federal law enforcement official, who had been briefed about the investigation but was not authorized to discuss, anonymously told The Associated Press: “We are seeing serious degradation in her mental health, certainly within the last 10 months, since December, ups and downs. Our working theory is her mental health was a significant driver in her unexpected presence in D.C. yesterday.”
The official added that Carey believed President Barack Obama was communicating to her. “Those communications were, of course, in her head,” the official said, noting that concerns about her mental health were reported in the last year to Stamford police.
Carey’s sisters, however, want to defend their sister’s reputation. While they do confirm she was suffering through depression, they say she was on medication to deal with it, and that she was on a plan to be taken off the meds. Since when have law enforcement been able to comment on someone’s mental health?
“My sister was not a bipolar, schizophrenic individual and I can’t say as to why she was in D.C., regardless of the reason she was there, her life shouldn’t have ended there,” Valarie said.
