Pharrell Williams thanks songstress Kelis for introducing him to Prada and Gucci in a recently interview with British Vogue.

The mega-producer and occasional rapper said he wouldn’t be known as the fashion icon he is today if he didn’t meet the free-spirited fashionsita 15 years ago.

“I’d just signed this girl called Kelis, and back then all I wore was Ralph Lauren’s Polo, because that was the thing. And Kelis turned to me and said, ‘You’ve got to get out of this box,'” he said. “She introduced me to Prada and Gucci. It was thanks to Kelis I discovered a life outside of monograms.”

Williams, who recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of his Billionaire Boys Club line, said his style is all about intricate details.

“It’s insane,” he of his brand’s success. “I’m just a details man.”

The September issue of British Vogue, which includes a spread by photographer David Bailey, hits newsstands August 5th.
