Jay-Z, Alicia & The Smiths Sweep Tony Award Nominations
Sure, last year’s Tony Award’s were filled with star-studded, head-banging moments, but was Jay-Z a nominee?
We don’t think so.
The Tony Awards recognize achievement in live American theatre, and are for Broadway productions and performances, so the producers of “Fela!”—that would include Jay-Z, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and Alicia Keys—must be proud. They scored a leading 11 gongs, including Best Musical, Direction and Choreography.
Their lead actor Sahr Ngaujah has also been nominated for “Best Performance.”
The play chronicles the life of late Nigerian Afrobeat guru and activist Fela Kuti.
