Our film and television faves showed out last night on the 2019 Golden Globe Red Carpet! From Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira to Taraji P. Henson and Regina King, the slayage was oh-so-real, but one of our absolute favorite looks of the night had to be from Janelle Monae! The Dirty Computer singer put the “gold” in Golden Globe with an amazing bronzy beat. Keep reading to learn how to recreate Monae’s look for less than $75.00! We got you!
Go for full, natural-looking brows.

Ms. Monae has notoriously full brows that put my natural brows to shame, so I enlisted a little help from the e.l.f. Cosmetics Instant Lift Brow Pencil ($2.00, ulta.com). Using the spoolie end of the pencil, brush your hairs upwards and then draw a line underneath the arch of your brow. Brushing your hairs back into place, draw another line above to outline the frame of your brow. Once you’re done, fill in your new brow frame using short, quick strokes of the pencil to mimic natural brow hairs.
Start with a flawless, skin-like base.

Janae’s skin was looking effortlessly flawless, so I turned to my favorite foundation to get the job done. The L’Oréal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Makeup ($10.99, ulta.com) is great for a skin-like finish that can be built up for more desired coverage. I applied my shade (W7 Caramel Beige) all over my face and blended it out. Next up, concealer!

Red carpet means flash photography, and that means absolutely no mercy on those dark circles! Use a concealer to hide darkness under the eyes and also brighten up the center of the face. I used the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in the shade 25 Medium ($6.99, ulta.com). Once my concealer is all blended out, it’s on to bronzer.

Bronzer is what gave Janelle that warm, sun-kissed look! Using the NYC Sun ‘N’ Bronze Bronzing Powder ($4.52, walmart.com) I added some color to the perimeter of my face. No casper white-cast over here! Using a fluffy brush, apply your bronzer underneath your cheekbones, along your temples and the top of your forehead, and along your jawline.

You know no golden-goddess look is ever complete without a ridiculous amount of highlighter. I used the Maybelline FaceStudio Master Chrome Metallic Highlighter in Molten Gold ($9.99, ulta.com) to add some glow to the high points of my face: cheekbones, the bridge and tip of my nose, and the center of my chin. I also used the highlighter as an eyeshadow, taking a damp brush to apply the molten gold color all over my eyelids.
Sultry, golden eyes.

We’ve already got our highlight color on our top lids; now, it’s time to blend. Taking your bronzer again, use a fluffy tapered brush to bring that color into your crease. Apply the brown bronzer in a windshield-wiper motion back and forth in the socket above your eye to add some warmth and depth to your crease. This is what gives that sultry, blown-out effect of Janelle’s eyeshadow. Sweep the bronzer color into the crease and underneath your lower lash line for a smoky, diffused effect.

Janelle’s eyeliner really pulls this look together. First, use a black kohl or pencil liner to darken the waterline and lower lash-line. this adds definition and pulls focus up to the eyes. Try the e.l.f. Cosmetics Waterproof Gel Eyeliner Pencil ($4.00, ulta.com). Then create your wing on top using a precise-tip, black liquid liner like the e.l.f. Cosmetics Expert Liquid Liner ($2.00, ulta.com). Of course, no look is complete without mascara. I used the L’Oréal Telescopic Mascara ($8.29, target.com) and amped up my lashes with a pair of falsies. Try the Ardell Wispies ($4.99, ulta.com).
Add some gloss, and you’re good to go!

To top off the look, Janelle kept it super simple with what looks to be just a clear gloss. Try the Maybelline Shine Shot Lip Topcoat ($5.99, maybelline.com) for a popping pucker. Boom–you’re now ready to slay all day like Janelle Monae!
