The first Monday in May is one of, if not THE most fashionable moment of the year: The MET Gala.
This years’ theme is Heavenly Bodies: Fashion And The Catholic Imagination and is sure to be one of the most controversial ones, yet! Who else could co-chair this event and theme with Vogue EIC Anna Wintour? None other than the fashion icon, Rihanna.
Whether we are going to get oversized crosses or black and white looks inspired by nuns, we can’t wait to see the creativity of celebs. Catholicism and religion have heavily influenced fashion throughout the years’ with designers like Gianni Versace and John Galliano (who at one point designed for House of Versace, after Gianni passed) having religious themes throughout their work. Click the next page to see the stars we are most excited to see and the designers we think they will wear.
RIHANNA

This year she’s not only attending, but our Bajan bad gyal is also co-hosting. We’re sure her look is going to be A-1. She’s known for staying on theme, so we can’t wait to see how she plays with religion or the designer she chooses to wear.

Her 2015 MET Gala look (China: Through The Looking Glass), may have turned into a meme with people comparing her look from everything from scrambled eggs to pizza, she wore Chinese designer, Guo Pei. The dress took over 20 months to make. Fashi-ON.
She wore this Gucci mask to Coachella, so will she play with their nunnery-esque looks from their Fall 2018 collection?

Couldn’t you just see her in one of their turbans or even one of their adorned bejeweled headpieces?!?!
ZENDAYA

Law Roach has turned Zendaya’s style into one to watch and she hasn’t disappointed at the MET Gala yet. She looked borderline unrecognizable at the 2016 MET Gala, with her bowl cut. Not only does she take risks with her outfits, but also her hair.

She’s only been attending for the past three years, so now that she has the hang of it, we can’t wait to see what she wears on the carpet.

Versace, who is known for their religious undertones throughout several impactful collections will undoubtedly be a designer of choice for the ball. In addition, you will see some of his works from his last collection (shown on the runway above) at the exhibit. It would be no surprise if Zendaya wore a vintage Atelier Versace piece.
SOLANGE

Solange‘s style is so effortless and her MET Gala looks are always head-turning, whether you like them or not.

For 2017, she wore a complete Thom Browne puffer jacket look, that was to pay homage to Missy Elliott.
I can see her wearing vintage Dior from the John Galliano era (October 1996 to March 2011). The infamous 2000 show opened with a bishop in an adorned piece (that will be on display at the MET exhibit) blessing the crowd and a model to open the show. Galliano is known for being inspired by many controversial themes and – yikes – is often accused of cultural appropriation.
CASSIE AND DIDDY

Cassie and Diddy always compliment each other nicely on the red carpet. Above, at the 2016 MET Gala, they didn’t really go with the China theme; however, they did look stunning together. Cassie, girl, you look great in white next to Diddy.

At the 2017 MET Gala, Diddy and Cassie made quite the entrance. Even Diddy was so enthralled by Cassie he had to take a seat! I can totally see them wearing Givenchy. Riccardo Tisci grew up in a devout Catholic family and used religious representations within his clothing creations during his time at Givenchy.

I can see Cassie in organza ruffles resembling angel wings, while Diddy wears a sharp priest collar or even simply sticking to black and white attire.
TRACEE ELLIS ROSS

The Black-ish actress is the stylish starlet of the moment. She always looks chic and fabulous. Her knee length, architectual look at last years’ MET Gala was on theme and faboulous. We can’t wait to see what she wears this year.

I can see Ross adorning herself with a religious headpiece like this vintage Dior piece above or wearing Alexander McQueen and playing with chainmail and fashion.
MISSY ELLIOTT

Okay, so, she’s never attended the Met Gala but we wish she would. Missy Elliott is known for her iconic style in music videos and I’d love to see it translated on to the red carpet for fashion’s biggest night out. Her tomboyish and stylish lewks would definitely bring it.
GRACE JONES

Another honorable mention, Grace Jones has never attended the MET Gala (and I’m not sure why). The model, muse, and overall culture maker would undoubtedly make a grand entrance with an ensemble that will give us all something to talk about.

I could see her wearing a Guo Pei piece. The Chinese designer is known for underlying religious inspirations in her clothing.
