After repeatedly maintaining that they would not release the dashcam video ofKeith Lamont Scott’s shooting, after much pressure the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department finally did so on Saturday. This comes one day after Scott’s widow released her own video of her husband being shot and killed by local police and days of political unrest and protests in the city.
However, as CNN points out, the video does little to answer the questions that the public has about the specifics of the shooting. As HELLO BEAUTIFUL previously reported, Scott’s family has maintained that the disabled father, never had a gun and was instead reading a book in his car when he was shot and killed on September 20.
Reviewing the videos, neither police dashcam or body-camera footage, actually shows Scott, 43, pointing a gun at police officers, like they initially claimed. At one point in the body-camera video, there is a view of Scott from his right side and he has his arm by his body, but it is unclear if there is a gun, CNN noted.
“You can’t clearly identify what, if anything, is in his hand,” attorney Justin Bamberg, who represents the Scott family, said at news conference on Saturday.
Last week, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney said that upon his own review of the videos that “there is no definitive visual evidence that he had a gun in his hand.”
“The footage itself will not create in anyone’s mind absolute certainty as to what this case represents and what the outcome should be,” Putney said on Saturday.
However, he doesn’t waiver from his belief that the shooting death was justified when ones takes into account the other evidence. According to Fortune, police also released photos of a gun that they said was retrieved at the scene, saying it contained Scott’s DNA and fingerprints. They also said the gun was loaded and Scott was wearing an ankle holster. Yet, as stated before, there isn’t any definitive proof that Scott was pointing the gun at the police.
The release of these videos and pictures come only one day after Scott’s widow Rakeyia Scott released the video of the shooting she took on her cell phone. NBC News wrote that in the two-minute,12-second footage, one can hear Scott “Don’t shoot him. He has no weapon!”
“He doesn’t have a gun. He has a TBI (traumatic brain injury),” Mrs. Scott yells. “He’s not going to do anything to you guys. He just took his medicine.” After Scott was shot, she yelled, “He better not be f—ing dead, he better not be f—ing dead. He better live, he better live!”
Scott was the 214th Black person killed by US police so far in 2016 of 821, according to Mapping Police Violence, says Al Jazeera News.
