The Chicago Tribune reports a staggering finding from the holiday weekend: 32 people were shot over the course of 15 hours in the “Windy City.”

According to the Tribune, 60 people in total were shot over the weekend and 28 were wounded between Sunday around noon and 3 a.m. Monday morning.

The amount of victims adds to the rising number of gun violence casualties in the last few months. During Memorial Day weekend, 69 people were shot, centralized on the city’s west side.

Among the victims were two cousins, a 5-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy were both shot in the leg within minutes of one another. The families of the children say they were enjoying a day playing outside when shots broke out, scattering a nearby crowd outside.

The girl’s older male cousin, Darryl Smith, rushed her to Comer Children’s Hospital.

“I literally ran through every red light,” Smith told the Tribune.

A few moments later, family members realized the 7-year-old was shot and rushed him to the hospital via ambulance. He also suffered a broken ankle.

In an unrelated incident, an 11-year-old was also injured when he first believed he was hit with a firecracker. Once medical staff examined the injury, they determined the child had been shot.

The Tribune goes on to list all of the victims, many of them under the age of 35.
