With so much bad news out there, this story is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Back in 2007, then-22-year-old Kevin Morton Jr. had a near death experience. The Arby’s employee was shot in the abdomen with doctors believing he had a 10 percent chance of making it through the night. 

“Whether we call it intuition, experience or a miracle … we put some extra sutures in and the bleeding stopped,” Dr. Dharti Sheth-Zelmanski, who was working the trauma unit at Detroit’s St. John Hospital the night Morton arrived, told NBC News.

“We knew he wasn’t going to give up. We weren’t gonna give up — so we had to make it happen,” said Sheth-Zelmanski said. “Whether we call it intuition, experience or a miracle … we put some extra sutures in and the bleeding stopped.”

Now, nine years later, Morton, 31, has graduated from Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine and is set to start his residency at the same hospital that saved his life. He plans to specialize in surgery and hopes one day he can pass on the gift he received from Sheth-Zelmanski, the Detroit Free Press noted.

“The compassion and drive that Dr. Sheth has shown in trying to save my life … I just wanna pay that forward,” Morton said.

“If I am ever in that situation, I hope God gives me the necessary skills, confidence and steady hands to save someone’s life, like Dr. Sheth did for me,” he added.

While they never found the person who shot Morton, he says he has forgiven them.

“Holding on to things like that tend to hold you back,” Morton said. “It’s the only way to move forward.”
