Why Does Marlo Hampton Have A Confederate Flag On Her Shirt?
Former Real Housewives of Atlanta star got in hot water this past weekend for rocking a controversial t-shirt to a NASCAR event. Her top read “I ♥ My Redneck Boyfriend” with hearts made out of Confederate flags.
According to BET, on The Shade Room’s Facebook page, one woman wrote, “Of course she loves her redneck boyfriend. That’s her income.” Another person wrote, “The words aren’t offensive but you would think an educated Black woman would know enough about her history than to wear a Confederate flag,” while another said “Same ‘rednecks’ that fought a war against their own country to keep their slaves. Congratulations, you’re stupid.”
After getting dragged on social media, she posted up a video apologizing for the misstep.
“Please accept my sincere apologies for any offense that was taken by my previous post. Please watch this video to understand my point of view…I truly respect all of your opinions and point of views,” she said.
But she still believes that she didn’t do anything wrong and said that she didn’t understand that the shirt would make people so upset.
Marlo: It’s a confederate flag, the ultimate symbol of racial hatred and slavery in America. Not a peace sign promoting equality. How else were Black folks supposed to respond, especially in these BlackLivesMatter times? Be happy?
“Being Mary Jane” Gets A New Showrunner and Executive Producer
Just because Being Mary Jane’s creator Mara Brock Akil has left her show for other opportunities, doesn’t mean Mary Jane is gone. Gabrielle Union’s drama will be back with a new showrunner and executive producer, Deadline reported.
“Being Mary Jane is full of characters and stories about which BET viewers are passionate. We knew it would take special talent to further this very important mission and we’re lucky to have found them in this dynamic duo,” said Stephen Hill, President of Programming, BET Networks.
“Will’s a master producer and storyteller and Erica is a dynamic writer whose experience in developing complex, multi-dimensional women makes her the ideal scribe to continue Mary Jane’s journey,” he added.
Shelton Kodish stressed that she is very excited to be chosen to further the legacy of this show.
“I’m honored to have an opportunity to partner with Will Packer, Gabrielle Union, and BET to create stories for Being Mary Jane,” she said. “Mara Brock Akil has created a show that has a unique ability to address issues relevant to black women and I’m thrilled to be in a position to tell those stories.”
Being Mary Jane goes into production later this summer in Atlanta.
Louisiana Set to Pass ‘Blue Lives Matter’ Bill; Would Classify Cop Attacks As Hate Crime
The state of Louisiana is this close to approving legislation that would consider any attack of violence against police officers, firefighters or emergency medical services personnel a hate crime.
According to CNN, it’s expected that Gov. John Bel Edwards will sign “Blue Lives Matter” bill that has passed in both sects of the Louisiana Legislature. Louisiana state Rep. Lance Harris wrote the bill said that a past police officer’s death inspired this bill.
“In the news, you see a lot of people terrorizing and threatening police officers on social media just due to the fact that they are policemen. Now this [new law] protects police and first responders under the hate-crime law,” Harris said.
Harris added: “I certainly do think there is a need for it. If you’re going to have an extensive hate crime statute then we need to protect those that are out there protecting us on a daily basis. There is a concerted effort in some areas to terrorize and attack police, and I think this will go forward and stop that.”
Anti-Defamation League Regional Director Allison Padilla-Goodman is strongly against this bill.
“The bill confuses the purpose of the Hate Crimes Act and weakens its impact by adding more categories of people who are already better protected under other laws,” wrote Padilla-Goodman. Word.
Meanwhile, where is the bill protecting the lives of Black and Brown people by the hands of trigger happy police officers?
