In a time when both Democratic presidential candidates seem to be going to great lengths to secure the Black vote, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders may have taken the lead with his new ad.
The ad takes viewers into a day in the life of Erica as she interacts with her 6-year-old daughter Alyssa. She shared that Alyssa has just learned about Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and the Civil Rights Movement.
“She asked me if Rosa Parks did not give up her seat for a white man, and I said yes, and then she said ‘But those are in the old days, right mommy?’ and I had to explain to her that it’s not really over.”
On July 17, 2014, Erica’s 43-year-old father died outside of a New York bodega after being placed in a chokehold by a police officer until he could no longer breathe.
Erica told her daughter that she’s since become an activist and a protestor similar to King and Parks that will never give up fighting for justice on behalf of police brutality victims.
“I believe Bernie Sanders is a protester. He’s not scared to go up against the criminal justice system” she said in the video.
“I’m behind anyone who is going to listen, who is going to speak up for us. I think we need to believe in a leader like Bernie Sanders” she added.
The video then intercuts several of Sanders speeches where he talks about social injustices. “It is not acceptable to me that we have seen young black men walk down streets in this country, be beaten and be killed unjustly,” said Sanders.
“When a police officer breaks the law, that officer must be held accountable” added the Vermont Senator to a resounding applause.
Watch the captivating video and let us know if it swayed your perception of Bernie Sanders.
