Last night, while thousands of protestors marched in New York City to protest the non-indictment of Officer Daniel Pantaleo for the murder of Eric Garner, the usually upbeat Daily Show host, Jon Stewart opened his show on a somber note.

“I honestly don’t know what to say. If comedy is tragedy plus time, I need more f*cking time. But I would really settle for less f*ucking tragedy to be honest with you. You know, I think what is so utterly depressing is that none of the ambiguities that existed in the Ferguson case exists in the Staten Island case. And yet the outcome is exactly the same: No crime, no trial, all harm; no foul. The coroner called it a homicide, the guy isn’t acting threatening, and we know that not through witness testimony from unreliable bystanders but because we are fucking watching it. Someone taped it.”

He goes on to add, “We are definitely not living in a post-racial society.” (We must add the obligatory “duh” here, thought we totally feel him.)

On Monday, the President announced plans for to invest in body-worn cameras among police officers and law enforcement officers. But what good will body cameras do? Even when we’re watching the murder of in front of us, there’s still no consequences for the actions of police.

There are no words for this.
