Listen, I always roll my eyes as soon as I hear someone utter the words, gluten free.” It’s usually someone who doesn’t even have celiac disease, but instead wants to be a part of whatever new diet trend to get skinny quick. So when I was invited to Asellina in the very swanky Gansevoort Hotel in NYC for a gluten free dinner, I wasn’t too excited. And then, I tried the food. Dear Lord, the gluten free menu at Asellina is what heaven tastes like.

Gracing the new menu are dishes such as hamachi crudo (with agrodolce, shaved fennel, jalapeno and blood orange), braised short ribs (with citrus germolata and rosemary polenta), and grilled chicken paillard (with marinated tomatoes, arugula salad and shaved parmesan) – and all pasta dishes can be served with gluten free pasta. So Asellina made it so that you don’t have to skimp on items that are usually riddled with gluten. You can enjoy just like the rest of us!

The hamachi will melt in your mouth. And don’t even get me started on those short ribs! They are so tender, you can eat them with a spoon. I thought I didn’t like beets, until I had their wood-fired beet salad. It changed my life. The flavor was almost meaty, without being too heavy. However, my favorite dish from the gluten free menu was the branzino alla genovese (baked Mediterranean sea bass, taggiasca olives, capers, pinenuts, fingerling potato, oven roasted campari tomatoes). Listen, you will want to request the chef’s presence just so you can kiss him on the lips. Oh, and two words: zucchini risotto. Nothing has ever tasted creamier or fresher.

Inspired by the flavors and textures of rustic Italian cuisine, Asellina is a neighborhood cucina and wine bar with a seductive atmosphere. Best known for fresh homemade pasta and pizza, Asellina also offers an array of traditional Italian dishes with a modern twist and unique wines by the glass and bottle. You’ll never leave. My first dinner there last three hours and even after that, I wanted to stay and luxuriate in the sexy setting.

Chef Andrea Montobobbio sincerely outdid himself in this offering! Please visit this amazing restaurant that not only serves as a hideaway for NYC’s hippest cool kids, but can easily be your favorite date night spot,  your fave girlfriend hangout, or even your new favorite brunch spot.
