Your babies diet during their first few months of life can be summed up in a few words: milk milk milk. Then soft solids are introduced and it’s peas, apples, carrots, milk, milk, and milk.  But after their first birthday introducing new foods can get a little tricky. I’ve often racked my brain trying to come up with recipes that are both tasty and healthy for my own picky eater.

Choosing foods that contain the nutrients to keep them growing strong is also an important factor.  It can be difficult, but this is a wonderful stage in your child’s development as they are experiencing some foods for the very first time. My best advice; listen to your baby, they will give you cues to what the love, and what they don’t (three words: turned over plates) and don’t be afraid to experiment.  Just cover your furniture in plastic.

Here are five of my favorite super-foods for a growing toddler:

1)  Sweet Potatoes

If you’re like most parents then you’ve already introduced your baby to sweet potatoes as part of their first foods. This yummy favorite is rich in fiber, potassium and vitamin c and makes a great base for other vegetables.

2) Quinoa

This versatile whole grain is a great choice for baby as it packs protein, iron, and nine essential amino acids.  Have it for breakfast with apples or add vegetables for a hearty dinner.

3) Eggs

No need to scramble in the morning.  Eggs are an amazing source of protein and make a great breakfast.  Doctor’s recommend waiting till after your child’s first birthday to introduce eggs into their diet due to the risk of allergy.  Look for one’s that contain Omega-3’s which is good for baby’s brain.

4) Broccoli

Broccoli is your baby’s friend.  This leafy green veggie is high in fiber and vitamin c.  Plus it makes a great first finger food.  Try it steamed with chicken or fish for a protein boost.

5) Avocados

Good fats are a great addition to your toddlers diet, and it doesn’t get any better than avocados.  Another great source of Omega-3’s as well as vitamins, a, c, and e. I add a little to my daughter’s eggs and she loves it!

There’s my list of my five favorite super foods, now tell me yours.  Have a favorite go to recipe? Share it in the comments below.
