Women in the 90’s kept it simple. If they liked you, you knew it. Your pager would light up with a special code. She’d ring your house phone until you picked up. She put hearts, stars and other doodles all around your name in her address book. The only mystery would be the time you spent apart because there were no status updates to read or tweets to retweet.

Before thirst traps, Facebook poking and internet dating, there was simple flirting. Some of my favorite sitcoms from the 90s taught me how to flirt. From Kimmy Gibbler’s undying love for Uncle Jesse to “Living Single‘s” Regine’s high-pitched laugh and cleavage-pushing ways, characters in 90s sitcoms had flirting down to a science.

Kimmy Gibbler always had her sites set on Uncle Jesse–a man who was easily 15 years her senior. Her brand of flirtation was often uncomfortable. Kimmy’s flirtation teetered on desperate. She was the best teacher of how not to flirt.
Maxine and Regine were both top-notch skeezers. Both of them rivaled one another in potential suitors and constantly had one in rotation. Peep Max’s “Little Black Book–” it was definitely a single girl’s gospel. Max’s brand of flirting was empowering. Regine’s was girlie. Between the two of them, their flirtation taught me how to be a single woman in New York City.

Kelly Bundy may not have been a true slut, but she sure had the wardrobe of one. Kelly’s flirtation scared me. She was way too young and too out there to be taken seriously. She was the kind of girl who could find herself in sticky situations because of the way she dressed and acted. I guess she learned it from her momma.
See, Kelly learned her skeezer ways honestly. Peggy Bundy had the “MILF” thing down pat, but she often teetered on slutty. This is the kind of flirtation most moms need to stifle and just share with their spouses.
Remember Blossom’s mile-a-minute chatty best friend, Six? She was always so much personality in such a little package, it was no wonder she ended up dating a man 10 years older than her, who was also married with kids! This is when flirting goes way wrong!
Fran Drescher’s entire existence as Fran Fine was centered around being flirty. She became the nanny to Mr. Sheffield’s children, but managed to endear herself to the rich widower at the same damn time. Fran is the definition of successful flirting.
Between Kim, Moesha, Neicey and Andell in this particular episode, it was tough to pick who the biggest 90’s skeezer was. From Kim poppin’ a squat in a class that she’s not even in to Andell offering to rent a car “right quick,” there’s more than enough flirty actions to go around!
Moesha’s flirting was often sinister masquerading as innocent. Kim and Andell’s flirting was just as desperate as Kimmy Gibbler and Neicey’s flirting was just somewhere in between.
Sandra taught me everything I needed to know about flirting. Always be a lady, make eye contact and speak in the sweetest tone possible.
It wouldn’t be a list of flirts if the godmother of all things flirty wasn’t on the list. Miss Blanche Devereaux holds the key to the gates of flirty heaven. This woman was engaging, perfectly lovely and all the way sassy. She is the blueprint of flirty. Everyone on this list has used her for inspiration to their characters.
