A Prophet

I’m a sucker for a good foreign film and any movie about prison culture so when this gem popped up in my on demand feed I pounced on it. This 2009 French drama tells the story of an imprisoned petty criminal of Algerian origins who is sentenced to 6 years in prison. At the beginning of his stay he cannot read or write and is considered the perfect prey for other inmates. Within the inmate hierarchy, he initiates himself into the Corsican and then Muslim subcultures eventually becoming a kingpin. “A Prophet” deals with many racial undertones, providing an interesting look into prisons in other countries. ( R, 155 min.)
