Gun violence is the heart of many ongoing debates. The surplus of gun-related deaths and injuries, including the senseless murder of 6-month old Jonylah Watkins, has spawned an outcry from the community.  “We had a full complement of police officers. It appears that these two or three people just for a reason unknown to us, started shooting at towards, or in the crowd. It was over in just a couple seconds,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. who attributes the crime to “the relentless drum beat of violence” in New Orleans.

“It’s a shame and its got to stop,” he told The Times-Picayune. The large turnout of 400 people spanned two blocks. According to NBC, the second lines have been a hot spot for violence. “They are an important part of our culture and our heritage,” he says of the festivities. And, he doesn’t plan on ending them due to the recklessness. “The cultural events are very important to us, it’s like calling for an end to Mardi Gras because someone takes an opportunity to shoot someone during one of our parades.”

The annual parade took place 1.5 miles the French Quarter and near the neighborhood Treme where HBO shoots it’s series “Treme.”
