Fashion’s Night Out Cancelled Because Of Riots
It looks like the free champagne and live celebrity dj’s on fashion biggest shopping event, Fashion’s Night Out, has been cancelled. After four years the event will go on a hiatus in the U.S. in 2013.

“Fashion’s Night Out will go on hiatus in the United States in 2013 in order to enable retailers to channel their resources toward strategies more in keeping with their current priorities,” a statement on the website for the event says.
Whether or not designers actually sold any of their clothes, or if this event brought us out of the recession, is debatable. Not to discredit the $1.5 million FNO raised for the NYC AIDS Fund. But what is certain is the amount of chaos and ratchetness that occurred in September during FNO 2013. The streets of SoHo were flooded with young kids consumers that went absolutely crazy. Residents were greeted with smashed windshields, garbage filled alleys and pure disorder.
Margaret Chin, a city councilwoman who represents the area, was passionate about ending the event hoping that FNO would understand their complaints.
“Last year’s Fashion’s Night Out in SoHo was blighted by violence and shockingly inappropriate behavior,” she said in a statement. “It is my hope that the organizers take use of this hiatus as an opportunity to reform Fashion’s Night Out and make it more responsive to the needs of the SoHo community.”
While organizers say the success of the event was never measured by profit, it seems like the efforts were more of a lost than a gain. If you’re game for a fashion field trip, Thailand and Ukraine will be hosting FNO for the first time this year.
