“Part of a truly diverse world is not needing to make a statement about the fact that it’s a diverse world. When we get to that point, we’ve gotten somewhere,” Rhimes told Oprah on “Next Chapter.”
Today, “Scandal,” the newest of her shows, features the first Black female lead character (played by Kerry Washington) since 1974’s “Get Christie Love!” and it’s loosely based on the work of real life trailblazer Judy Smith. Up next from Shondaland productions is expanding into comedy with “Awkward Black Girl” creator Issa Rae’s “I Hate L.A. Dudes.” Real recognize real.
