Handless First Grader Wins Handwriting Competition
#BlackGirlMagic: Handless First Grader Wins Handwriting Competition
7-year-old Anaya Ellick is a little superstar.
This first grader just won a handwriting competition while holding a pencil between her arms, ABC reports.
Anaya, who is a student at Greenbrier Christian Academy, beat out 50 other students in the category for students with cognitive delays or physical or developmental disabilities for the Nicholas Maxim Special Award For Excellence in Manuscript Penmanship, according to ABC.
“There is truly very little that this girl cannot do,” said Principal Tracy Cox.
“She is a hard worker,” she said. “She is determined. She is independent. She is a vivacious and a no-excuses type of young lady.”
Proud mama Bianca Middleton couldn’t help but gush about her daughter’s accomplishments.
“She ties her shoes, she gets dressed by herself, she doesn’t really need any assistance to do anything,” mom Bianca Middleton told WTKR.
A team of occupational therapists were taken back by Anaya’s handwriting.
“We looked at her writing and were just stunned to see how well her handwriting was, considering she writes without hands,” according to competition director Kathleen Wright.
We are so proud that Anaya has never let her physical disability deter her from soaring in and out of the classroom.
