Cuba Gooding Jr. has been slaying the role of OJ Simpson in FX’s new series, American Crime Story: The People Vs. OJ Simpson.
The nuances of his performance are so accurate, we thought, he must have spent hours studying the estranged NFL player for months…but think again.
Cuba has never even met OJ.
The actor told E!, that he didn’t even know what the role was when he signed up for an audition–hearing Ryan Murphy was behind the project made him ready to tackle anything thrown at him.
When the role of OJ landed in his lap, the 48-year-old made the decision not to meet the man himself.
“I played him when he was at his most flamboyant and charismatic,” Gooding explains. “And he’s just a shell of himself now, sitting in a jail cell.”
Now that the show is finished, Cuba says he would be open to a one-on-one: “Yeah. I mean, now. I’ve finished the character. The character’s locked away, so I would do it.”
When asked the age old question, Did OJ do it?, Cuba, ever so poised says, “If we did our job right, people will understand how they came up with that verdict based on incompetence on many different levels. And I hope even in that statement, I hope you don’t think that I think he’s guilty or innocent.”
Way to keep it ambiguous, Cuba!
