“Through A Lens Darkly: Black Photographers & The Emergence Of A People” won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Documentary. This film is a national project used to connect communities and history through family photographic archives. This Thomas Allen Harris-directed docu is the first one of its kind to explore how photography shapes the identity, aspirations and social emergence of African-Americans from slavery to the present by exploring images that have been suppressed, hidden, forgotten or lost.

The film features the works of Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, Anthony Barboza, Hank Willis Thomas, Coco Fusco, Clarissa Sligh and many others.

“I’m trying to redefine the visual document of what we look like for ourselves,” one of the film’s photographers shares. Where we come from is not too far off from the brutal images of our past. We must never forget and this documentary not only acts as a reminder, but as an educational tool as well. Congrats to this beautiful film!
